The Rainbow Princess - Best of Stories for Teenagers

Home

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom that was like any other, ruled by a good king. His people loved him, and he loved them. Nothing out of the ordinary—oh, well, except maybe for one thing: the princess, Elani, who had magical rainbow hair.

"Dad, you need to be careful!"

"Not when my strong daughter is always there to save the day! Where are you going?"

"I'm performing at the festival. The royal princess is the kingdom's magician!"

"Have fun!" The Best Suitor

It was clear just how much Elani was loved by her people. She was humble and gentle. The king had raised her on his own; Leora, the queen, had gone out one day and never returned. Elani had never known her mother.

"The roses, huh? Hello, my name is Ruby."

"I'm Emerald."

"I'm Sky."

"You... you're fairies! Poor thing, first time seeing someone worthy. At least she's not like Leora."

Hearing her mother's name insulted, Elani grew furious. "How dare you insult my mother?"

"Dear, your mother was our sister. We're your aunts, Elani, and we want you to fight and defeat the Shadow Queen. She's destroying the Rainbow Realm."

Elani was confused. "Rainbow Realm? Shadow Queen? What are you—"

"Stay away from my daughter!"

"What a kind greeting. Leave Elani alone."

"Rude. Think about what we said."

Elani was left baffled. "Dad, what was that about? They spoke about Rainbow Realms and a Shadow Queen."

"They're just lying."

"No, they weren't! You never talk about Mom. Please, tell me the truth."

"Your mother was a fairy from the Rainbow Realm. Those fairies are indeed her sisters."

"Mom was a fairy? But... but those fairies seemed so mean."

"Well, they each bore the color of the rainbow. But your mother... huh, you're not a rainbow fairy. You have no color."

"How can you say that? I'm your sister!"

"Are you sure?"

"And that's how I met her. When her sisters found out about us, they mocked us terribly. But that didn't matter because she was finally happy."

"What happened to her?"

"Well, when you were little, a Shadow Queen decided to seize the power of the Rainbow Realm. Leora went to save her sisters, but even after being victorious, your mom never returned."

Elani thought about everything quietly. "Dad, I need to go to them."

"Elani, didn't you hear everything I said?"

"I know, but this Shadow Queen must be stopped. Mom found a way, so shall I."

"Her sisters can do that. They won't."

"Dad, look, eventually the Shadow Queen will come for me too."

The king gave Elani a necklace. "Your mother used a similar kind to communicate with those of the Rainbow Realm. You were to receive this when you turned 18."

Elani considered the pendant. "Ruby, I need to see you at once."

She vanished and appeared in a beautiful place. "Wow."

"Welcome, little niece. Would you like some raindrop soda or some fluffy sunbow?"

"Quit the formalities and tell me what you know." The Greatest Treasure

"Fine. The Shadow Queen is a horrible entity. She engulfs every drop of color and happiness. Only Leora managed to stop her, probably through luck. Huh, she managed to subdue her, but over time, the effects of their battle must have faded, hence her return. She lives in the Valley of Gloom. Only darkness and mist exist there."

"No tips on how to fight her?"

"That is up to you."

"You expect me to defeat her alone? How do I even reach there?"

"Look, kid, you've got magic."

"Me? Me, I volunteer!"

Elani was mesmerized as a pretty unicorn bounded in. "A real unicorn!"

"Of course I'm real! I'm Crystal. You're Leora's girl. Huh, you look just like her. You smell like her too."

"Crystal, you're not going."

"Oh yes, he will. I require Crystal to accompany me to the Valley of Gloom."

"You little—no Crystal, no rainbow hero. Crystal was an amazingly fast flyer, and the fairies used him to travel quickly to other realms."

"Hm, fine."

With that, Elani and Crystal took off. "Off to the gloomy Valley we go!"

"No place is too sad or scary as long as you're here with me."

"Hey, I know this song. Your mom would sing it. I guess she sang it to you too."

"I hope I can find out more about her."

"I think you're really brave."

"Oh, I'm not. I mean, this queen is evil. Her heart is cruel, and her nails—oh, they're as long and dark as spider legs."

"Glad to know." Mud Pony

When they reached there, the land was horrifically dark. "Oh, I guess she's expanding her reign."

They landed and looked around. After much walking, they finally spotted a looming castle. "Come on."

They snuck into the eerie palace. "Where do you think she is?"

"Definitely not for a walk in the sun."

"Welcome. Why has that clown realm sent a little girl into my domain?"

"Stay away!"

"And a mule."

"I'm a unicorn!"

"Enough chit-chat. I didn't come here for that."

Elani tried using her powers, but her attempts were futile. She'd never been trained in magical combat. "My... my power won't work!"

"Ha! Let me guess, the fairies took one look at your hair and thought you'd be able to defeat me. What's happening? Only one of them almost succeeded in overthrowing me: Leora. But she couldn't defeat me. I bewitched her into a deep sleep. Once I've conquered the realms, I'll wake her up to witness my feat."

"Mom!"

"Hah, ow! Ouch! You'll pay for that!"

Elani, Crystal, and Elani narrowly escaped her attacks. The two of them stopped on top of a hill to rest. "Did she say—"

"Yes, Mom's still alive. And I think I know how to defeat the queen too."

She called for the fairies. "Elani, did you defeat her?"

"Well, no, but I—"

"Hah, knew it."

"Listen, I think I know how to defeat her. I need your help. The queen absorbed most of my powers."

Elani waited, hopeful. "We can't help you, Elani."

"Why not? Come on, Ruby."

"No. If we help her, what about our powers?"

"Goodbye."

"Hello? Hey, why? Those mean fairies! Crystal, let's go to my kingdom."

And so, flying over the glimmering seas, they finally arrived at Elani's kingdom. Passersby heard Elani's name and rushed to her aid. "Princess, what happened to you? Is that a unicorn?"

"Please, I need Dad."

"Elani?"

"Oh, Elani!"

The king knelt beside her as she slowly related everything. "Leora is alive?"

"Yes. I just need color to fuel my powers. Leora's sisters, we tried. They refused."

"Princess, if you need color, you can take mine."

"Mine too! Take all the yellow you need."

Everyone spoke up, urging her to use their colors. "But I couldn't do that."

"Actually, you can. I've seen your aunts do it. No one gets hurt. You just need to return their colors."

"But what if—"

"Elani, we believe in you."

And so, Elani borrowed the love and colors of her people. "Huh, I feel great! Come on, Crystal."

"Everyone, I'll be back soon." Dirty Creatures

The two whizzed through the air towards the Shadow Queen's palace. "Shadow Queen, come on out!"

"Little rainbow and her pet, back again? No chit-chat, remember? Hah."

Elani used her magic, making sure they never touched the queen. "W hat's wrong? Afraid I'll take away your powers?"

"Uh, wasn't one failed attempt bad enough?"

"The only failed attempt is your makeup."

"Horsey needs to be quiet."

"No, you need to be quiet."

"Crystal, hah!"

The colors merged into one, and the lights— "No!"

Just then, Elani's necklace began to glow. "Elani, that's Leora's voice!"

The necklace led them to a dark chamber. There sat Leora, groggy and confused. "Mom?"

"Leora!"

"Crystal! Elani!"

The sleep spell had broken after the queen had been struck by Elani's magic. "We need to go."

The three of them hurried off to the Rainbow Realm. The fairies were shocked. "Leora!"

"You hush. Elani, I need you to fill me in on everything that's happened."

Leora listened to everything Elani said. "I thought my idea would work."

"It will work this time. There's two of us."

"She's here."

Under Leora's orders, the fairies ran away. "Huh, you thought you could defeat me? You're nothing but a child."

"Maybe, but I'm not alone."

"Huh?"

Leora. Finally, the Shadow Queen was no more, but Elani's hair lost its color. "Honey, I can't do magic."

"No matter. Now I look just like you, Leora."

"Elani, um, thank you for defeating the evil queen."

"We did what we had to do, and in the end, you're still my sisters."

"We're sorry. You've both saved us, even though we treated you terribly. How can we ever make it up to you?"
